Scenario-Based Translation Framework

An AI-Powered Educational Platform for Ugandan Secondary Schools to Generate, Solve, and Engage with Real- World, Curriculum-Aligned Academic Challenges

1. Project Overview

SBTF Studio is a gamified, AI-powered learning platform designed for Ugandan secondary schools. Instead of presenting students with abstract textbook problems, the platform translates curriculum topics — across subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Geography, and ICT — into localized, real-world scenarios drawn from everyday Ugandan contexts like agriculture, the marketplace, and local engineering. Students engage with these scenarios daily, guided not by an answer key but by an AI tutor that uses Socratic questioning to help them reason their way to a solution.

The platform is built around three connected roles — learners, teachers, and school administrators — each with a dedicated portal, and is designed to scale from individual classroom use to a national leaderboard and tournament system.

2. Problem Statement

Many students struggle to connect abstract academic concepts with real life, which weakens both engagement and retention. Existing digital learning tools in the Ugandan context are often either static question banks with no adaptive guidance, or generic international platforms that are not aligned with the National Curriculum and lack local relevance. There is also limited infrastructure for schools to track engagement and performance at a national or regional scale in a way that motivates healthy competition. SBTF Studio addresses this gap by combining curriculum alignment, localized content, AI- guided reasoning, and gamified engagement in a single platform.

3. Objectives

  • Store and organize a comprehensive, curriculum-aligned question bank spanning all subjects in the Ugandan National Curriculum.

  • Allow teachers to generate localized, scenario-based questions and complete examination papers from a topic selection.

  • Use AI as a Socratic tutor that guides learners toward solutions rather than supplying answers directly.

  • Drive daily engagement through community scenario challenges, discussion boards, and study streaks.

  • Track and rank the performance of individual students and schools at local, regional, and national levels.

  • Provide secure, role-based authentication for schools, teachers, and learners.

  • Build a seasonal tournament structure to drive sustained institutional engagement.

4. Target Users

  • Learners: Secondary school students (Ordinary and Advanced Level) who take on daily challenges, build study streaks, debate solutions with peers, and receive Socratic guidance from the AI tutor.

  • Teachers: Educators who generate assessment material, run classroom-specific assignments, monitor student streaks, and produce full examination papers on demand.

  • Schools & Administrators: Institutions that monitor leaderboard standing, engagement metrics, and regional academic performance, and manage the school’s roster of registered students.

5. Key Features

5.1 Localized Scenario Generation

Abstract curriculum topics are converted into relatable, real-world Ugandan scenarios with dynamically randomized values and variables, encouraging critical thinking over memorization.

5.2 Daily Challenges & Gamification

  • A new subject-specific scenario is released to the whole platform every 24 hours.

  • Visual streak counters track consecutive days of participation to build consistent study habits.

5.3 Socratic AI Tutor

Rather than returning direct answers, the AI tutor asks targeted, sequential questions that scaffold the student’s own reasoning, helping them locate and correct mistakes independently.

5.4 National & Institutional Leaderboards

  • Learner Leaderboard: ranks students nationally by accuracy, depth of reasoning, submission speed, and streak length, with digital badges for top performers.

  • Institutional Leaderboard: ranks schools using an aggregate of participation rate and top- student performance, filterable by region (Central, Western, Eastern, Northern).

  • School Verification Layer: maps students to a pre-verified national school roster to protect leaderboard integrity.

5.5 Discussion Portals

Threaded discussions sit beneath each daily challenge, letting students compare problem-solving approaches, with teacher moderation to pin strong solutions and correct misconceptions.

5.6 Automated Examination Generator

Teachers can generate complete, balanced exams from a text prompt, cross-referenced against National Curriculum Development Centre guidelines, with an accompanying marking guide and solution key.

5.7 Multi-Portal Secure Authentication

Separate, role-aware login flows for students, teachers, and administrators keep academic data isolated and easy to monitor through dashboards.

6. Prototype & Current Progress

A working front-end prototype has been built covering the three core portals of the platform:

  • Access Portal (login): A role-based login screen that switches between Student, Teacher, and Administrator modes, each with its own framing, credential format, and visual identity.

  • Student Arena: The learner-facing hub featuring the Socratic AI chat workflow for scenario challenges, a live streak counter, and a Tournament Grounds view showing matchups and national standings.

  • Admin Ledger: A school administrator dashboard showing top-performer and consistency rankings, plus an identity and credential registry for registering students and resetting access codes.

These prototypes currently run on sample/seed data to demonstrate the intended interactions and are the foundation for the Phase 2 web application described below.

7. Proposed Technology Stack

LayerTechnology
Programming LanguagePython 3.x
AI EngineGoogle Gemini API / OpenAI GPT API with custom Socratic system prompts
Backend FrameworkFlask (MVP), migrating to Django or FastAPI at scale
FrontendHTML, CSS, JavaScript, transitioning to React
Real-Time Communication WebSockets (Socket.io) for live chat and leaderboard updates
Data Storage & CachingJSON (early dev), PostgreSQL, Redis for leaderboard caching
Document ProcessingLaTeX / ReportLab for printable exam papers
HostingLocalhost → Render/Heroku → AWS or GCP at scale

8. Development Roadmap

Phase 1 — MVP (Command-Line Interface)

  • Core Python scripts for multi-subject topic menus.

  • Initial Socratic system prompts and basic scoring logic.

Phase 2 — Web Application Integration

  • Flask web app with secure login portals for schools, teachers, and learners.

  • Public Daily Challenge module, streak counters, and peer discussion sections.

  • Prompt-based Automated Examination Generator with download support.

Phase 3 — Gamified Enterprise Platform

  • Real-time leaderboards and analytical dashboards on a modern frontend framework.

  • Anti-cheating safeguards to protect leaderboard integrity.

  • Regional and district filters for public school rankings.

9. Future Vision

  • The Tournament Arc: Seasonal competitions aligned to school terms, culminating in live “National Scenario Blockade” events for top-ranked students and schools.

  • Holiday Masterclasses: Holiday bootcamps with an “Advanced Skills Mode” to prevent learning loss between terms.

  • Institutional Certification: An annual School Tech-Readiness Certification plus termly diagnostic reports for school boards.

  • National Academic Wall of Fame: A public recognition portal profiling top-performing students, teachers, and schools.

10. Ethical Considerations

  • Student Data Privacy: compliance with national data protection regulations; no personal data stored without institutional or guardian authorization.

  • Academic Integrity: the Socratic tutor and discussion forums are tuned and monitored to prevent the platform from being used to bypass critical thinking.

  • Curriculum Authenticity: all generated challenges and exams are kept aligned with Ministry of Education and Sports learning goals.

    1. Conclusion

SBTF Studio aims to turn abstract textbook theory into localized, real-world problem-solving, giving every learner daily opportunities to engage, reason, and improve. By combining an AI Socratic tutor with national leaderboards and a structured tournament system, the platform is designed to celebrate academic excellence and build lasting institutional pride across Ugandan secondary schools.
